Lloyd carries on family tradition

 

04-Mar-2006: HILLSBOROUGH -- Anne Russell bounded into Lloyd's Pharmacy with a handful of daffodils. "Happy spring!" she sang, handing her large yellow blooms to Evelyn Lloyd.
The pharmacist slipped into the back room and returned with Russell's prescription and a slender green vase.

"These are beautiful, thank you," said Lloyd, arranging the flowers on the countertop while Russell signed for her medication.

Russell has brought her garden flowers to the pharmacy since she and her husband moved near the town a few years ago.

"She and her daddy were the first ones who welcomed us when we moved here," Russell said.

A Hillsborough native, Lloyd has welcomed many a visitor and newcomer.

She keeps the pharmacy's storefront stocked with 50-cent Cokes, 35-cent Nabs and 5-cent chewing gum, drawing in kids after school and neighboring business owners for mid-afternoon snacks.

Snapshots of customers' children and grandchildren line the back wall. A stand of old Hillsborough postcards her father sold in the 1970s is still tucked in a back corner.

When Lloyd decided to move out of the James Pharmacy nearly 20 years ago and set up shop around the corner, she carved out a niche to stand out from the chain pharmacies.

She stocks home remedies for the old-timers. Swamp root for the kidneys. Alum for pickling. Sulfur for a spring cleaning of the body.

"People take sulfur and put it with molasses to purify the blood, so to say," Lloyd said. "I'd be afraid I'd choke and the sulfur would go in my lungs and I'd get pneumonia, with my luck."

Nearly 80, George Johnson remembers Lloyd's father, Allen, selling him medicine in 1934.

"I was 6 years old," he said, half-listening as Lloyd discussed a vitamin B supplement with another customer.

When the customer left, he reminded Lloyd that his lady friend died not quite two weeks ago.

Lloyd, who dresses casually with New Balance sneakers and no white lab coat, came around the counter.

"She was a good part of your life," the pharmacist replied.

Lloyd's pharmacy is her second home.

The back room is plastered with Carolina basketball photographs cut out of local papers. In the afternoon "The Young and the Restless" competes with the police scanner.

She graduated second in her high school class and in the top five of UNC's Pharmacy School. In 1982, she became the first woman to serve on the state's Board of Pharmacy.

Sixteen years ago, the town's residents put her on the Town Board, on which her father served 30 years, all told. Plaques, certificates of appreciation and photos tell of the duo's community service over a span of several decades.

Although a Travel and Leisure magazine tops the stack beside the blue chairs, Lloyd can't recall her last vacation.

With one full-time assistant and a couple of high school girls who come in after school, if Lloyd leaves town, there's no one to fill the prescriptions.

"I don't find I have any more time than when Daddy was living," she said.

She is leaning toward one more term on the board and keeping the pharmacy's doors open at least that long.

After that, Lloyd says, she may get away a bit.

"I've seen everything I want to, except probably Egypt," she said. "I would like to see the pyramids."
