Prices hold off feisty Wanderers
07-May-2007: Prices Pharmacy and Wanderers went right down to the wire in their premier netball game played in excellent conditions at Saxton Courts on Saturday.
Prices made the stronger start, with their mid-court settling quickly and establishing a better flow through court. They had confidence to let the ball go and went into the first break leading 16-12.
The second quarter see-sawed as turnovers crept into both teams' play with Prices leading 22-21. Prices came out strong in the third quarter to outscore Wanderers 14-9 and take a commanding lead.
However, Wanderers dominated the final quarter with their through-court attack and defence. Although Wanderers scored five unanswered goals to finish the game and gain a bonus point in losing 42-45, they were guilty of not finishing.
Tineil Stevenson was Wanderers' standout player hustling on defence, driving aggressively through court and working tirelessly on the circle edge to ensure her shooters quality ball. But the shooters lacked consistency with the exception of Janine Marr who had a tidy game at goal attack.
Jenelle Strickland's premier debut at goal keep was steady while Janelle McGregor toiled throughout to keep Prices' scoring machine Leigh Leigh Wiremu (32 from 37) at bay.
Prices coach Pania Raerino was content with her charges, saying that all players did their job. The attacks displayed good movement on and off the circle edge. Renee Evans fed her shooters intelligently.
Wanderers coach Pryani de Silva-Currie was pleased with her team's performance. They played a solid four quarters, finished strongly in the final quarter but conceded there were a number of errors to work on.
Jacks Office Products Depot Richmond was on song accounting for Stoke A 77-40.
Stoke scored the first goal but it was Jacks OPD which rattled on the next 13 to end the first quarter 22-5 in front.
To Stoke's credit it regrouped at the break and positional changes were made which injected some fire power to its line-up. Dana Tulloch moved from the unaccustomed position of goal defence to goal attack and Sophie Adams entered on the wing which offered another dimension to the offensive third.
Promoted Stoke X player Melissa Marfell was an able circle defender replacement.
Jacks OPD made a number of changes in each of the final three quarters and even though its play dropped a little in the middle two quarters it was more a case of Stoke showing signs of competitiveness which resulted in the quarter scores being 16-13 and 17-15 to Jacks OPD.
Jacks rookie Kirsty Dempster should be pleased with her efforts at wing attack. Chantel King played three quarters of the game between goal keep and goal defence and gathered in nine clean intercepts along with numerous tips.
Jacks put in a powerful final quarter to outscore Stoke 22-7.
Richmond Black blew out the cobwebs when it accounted for the young Stoke Motueka team 62-36.
Stoke Motueka had the better start with Richmond a little slow in gathering momentum. Stoke's goal attack, Shannon Francois (24 from 28) shouldered a heavy workload, doing a power of court work and slotting excellent long-range shots.
Natala Bain had a quiet first quarter at goal shoot, was replaced in the second, but returned in the third with a resurgence.
Silone Williams had a sound game at goal keep where she directed her younger partners well.
Stoke Motueka played some good patches but Richmond's experience paved the way for its victory. Richmond was well served by mid courters Sharon Evans, Penny Jackson, Cindy Turipa and Marjolein Edwards while Amy Chippendale made an enterprising contribution at goal attack.
