08-Feb-2007: For decades, the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Florida A&M has been a point of pride - obviously for the university, but also Tallahassee and the state of Florida.

Through FAMU's good times and tough times, the pharmacy school has been one of its most reliable anchors, an important training ground for pharmacists and those pursuing careers in research-related aspects of the profession. It continues to be a magnet for high-performing minority scholars across the country, and it is responsible for turning out more minority pharmacists than any institution in the nation.

Now the college has hit a bump in the road. It's on probation and is facing an ultimatum from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, which has essentially said the school must shape up by June 2008. The problems cited by the council focus on budget and faculty shortcomings.

Ironically, part of the school's problems lie in its success - it's been such a draw for students that its growth has perhaps exceeded its ability to meet the high demand in the face of financial constraints.

No doubt, there are many explanations, some more valid than others. But the bottom line is clear: There must not be any excuses en route to returning the College of Pharmacy to star status.

This is not just FAMU's problem, although incoming President James Ammons understands that the pharmacy school's crisis is one of the most urgent issues on his agenda when he takes office in a few months.

In addition, it must be on the radar screen of the Florida Board of Governors, legislators and Gov. Charlie Crist - because the demand for top-flight pharmacists and pharmacy researchers will only grow in our growing state.
