The right prescription

 

09-Jun-2007: Jill Lester's tan has little chance to fade.
"I'm usually in Vegas or Cancun or Tampa Bay ... if I don't have to work," she said.
The sun seeker's blithe attitude hides her will to compete.
In seventh grade, Ms. Lester declared her objective: to be high school valedictorian. By her sophomore year at Mesquite High School, 1994-95, she pursued that goal with vigor.
"If you have anything that somebody wants, it makes your life very difficult," she said, remembering the rivalry among top students.
"I was a cheerleader in high school, so it was really hard to balance everything out," Ms. Lester said. "It came to the point that I wanted to be valedictorian more than anything else. I still did the extracurricular activities, but that was my main goal.
"It was a struggle." Then she paused, throwing her arms in the air. "But I got it!"
She laughed, shaking her head at the mock conceit. "Just kidding."
The title only gets you so far, she said.
"When you go to college, nobody cares if you were valedictorian or salutatorian," she said. "But it gives you some self-esteem. It's not just about being smart. It's about working hard."
Old habits continued in college and pharmacy school where, Ms. Lester said, all she did was study.
"This past year, I finally relaxed," she said. "I'm having the time of my life now. I do all the things that other kids did when I was studying.
"When they went for spring break, I was home studying. Now the roles are reversed," she said. "They're trying to either finish their degrees or they're trying to change jobs, because they didn't do what they wanted the first time around, and I'm just living the life of Riley.
"My plan definitely worked."
Ms. Lester lives with her parents in Mesquite, but she's building a lake house in Gun Barrel City. She plans to stay with her parents on days that she must commute to her two jobs.
"I just pretty much come and go as I please," she said of her living arrangement. "They hardly ever see me, because I'm never home."
Ms. Lester works as a pharmacist for a Dallas grocery store. Other days she is a clinical consultant for a company that provides workers' compensation coverage to employers.
Getting her doctorate in pharmacy wasn't Ms. Lester's first choice.
"I was doing pre-med [in college], and I observed a surgery," she said. "I came really close to fainting. ... It physically made me ill."
Determined to overcome her squeamishness, she scheduled another observation slot.
"I couldn't even see an IV go in without fainting," she said.
So a professor encouraged her to look into pharmacy school, since she was already a whiz in biochemistry.
"It was the best decision I ever made," Ms. Lester said. "It is definitely a perfect fit for me.
"I do immunizations at the pharmacy where I work, so I'm exposed to a little bit of blood, but it's not to the degree that it was at the hospital in the surgery," she said.
And it gives her the flexibility to fly to the desert when it's raining in Dallas.
"That is what I love about my life," she said. "I don't have any restrictions. You work so hard to have the time but also to have the means to do it."
But she doesn't take all the credit.
"My parents were awesome," she said. "They paid for my school. I had a scholarship, too, but I didn't have to work for extra money.
"Now it's like my turn to give back. When I go to Vegas, they get to come along too. I'm an investment that pays off!"
