National Pharmacy Association Beer Mats Hit The Spot With Students And Landlords, UK

 

25-Apr-2007: Fifty thousand free beer mats and posters have been requested by student unions in England, Wales and Scotland as part of the second wave of the NPA's Ask Your Pharmacist campaign. The materials highlight the stop smoking services available in local pharmacies.

NUS Vice President (Welfare) Veronica King said:

"NUS is thrilled that students unions have embraced this campaign - which will no doubt be vital in assisting thousands of students quit smoking. NUS hopes that when the smoking ban comes in this summer students take stock and quit. But it isn't easy and we're really encouraged that NPA have innovated so effectively to reach out to such a vital audience in the quest to reduce the number of smokers, and ultimately to promote the health of smokers and passive smokers alike."

The first part of the campaign saw 200,000 beer mats sent to pubs in towns where schools of pharmacy are based. The NPA has also received requests from pubs eager to highlight the upcoming ban who found out about the campaign through word of mouth.

Ian Wharmby, the landlord of the Canterbury Arms from Manchester said "I first saw the beer mats when a customer brought them in from another pub. They are an excellent way to get people talking and educate our customers about the upcoming ban. I can't wait for our pub to become smoke free."

"I'm delighted this element of the NPA Ask Your Pharmacist campaign has caught the imagination of its intended audience. There are a lot of smokers in pubs who will soon be thinking about kicking the habit rather than stepping outside for a cigarette. By targeting pubs we're reminding them then and there that the community pharmacy is the best place to go for advice and support".
